After all of that homework and those chores his mum made him do (even though he said he was busy!), Sora isn't in any fit mood to do anything but lie in his bed and sulk. Being eleven is hard work, and he shouldn't be expected to do so much in one day (and stay indoors!) when all he really wants to do is see his friends and play by the beach.

Sora stomps his way out of his house a half hour later (much to his mother's chagrin: "Sora, what did I tell you about stomping around the house?"), and finding a spare branch, makes his way to the shore. He's wearing his sandals and even though there's a stain on his white t-shirt, he refuses to change it.

Dragging the branch along the soft dirt, he traces a never-ending line. The sun is still in the sky, shining brightly, but in a few hours he knows it'll start to set, and he'll have to go back home. He suddenly wonders what he's going to have for dinner, and wonders if he'll have to help set the table too.

Moments later, Sora finds himself drawing near to the beach. He can hear the waves crashing, and he smell the salty tang in the air. It's his favourite place to be, and he can't think of a better location to let his frustrations be carried off in the waves of the ocean than here.

The paopu tree is empty; he half expects to see Riku there, as is usual...but nothing. Slowly, Sora draws closer to the sand and takes a seat, his legs sprawled out in front of him, his palms flat on the ground allowing him to lean back slightly to stare at the blueness of the sky.

It feels weird when he's all alone.

Except he's not really all alone, is he?

Sand has this wonderful tendency of masking footsteps, due to its granular, ever-changing nature. Especially when one walks lightly to begin with.

Kairi never needs to ask where Sora is, she just knows. It's an ability she's never questioned. Why should she? Sora is like a star, his presence shines to her like a beacon, no matter where he is.

Making no noise at all, she drops down onto the sand beside him.

Sora tilts his head to the side, sensing a presence so familiar to him. He smiles, seeing Kairi.

She has a miraculous way of making his frustration just melt away, making everything seem okay again.

"Hi," he says.

"Hi," she replies, smiling at him.

She digs her bare toes into the sand, until her feet are buried up to the ankles.

"Have a bad day?" she asks.

Sora nods, turning his sight back to the water. He straightens then, and picks up the branch, tracing little nonsensical patterns in the sand.

"Yeah, kinda," he admits.

"What happened?" she asks curiously.

She knows Sora well. She knows that bottling things up inside goes against his nature. A bit of gentle prodding and the words will pour out of him, like a dam bursting.

He lets out a despondent sigh. "I had so much homework to do," he starts. "I was inside my room all day doing that. And then when I'm about to see if you or Riku were around, my mum tells me I have to do chores because she's busy. I was just gonna go for a second 'cause I had that independent study project to do, too."

He's drawn a star in the sand.

As he talks, she uses her index finger to draw a shooting star, making sure the tail on it links to Sora's sand doodles.

"Stars should never be on their own, they belong with other stars."

She's silent for a moment.

"But now your homework is done, we've got at least three hours 'til either of us gets called for dinner... That's lots of time."

Sora nods, watching Kairi add to his own drawing with great interest.

"Yeah," he says thoughtfully, a smile slowly appearing on his face. "It's prettier that way, anyway."

The smile grows as his optimism does. She's right. At least everything he's had to do is done. Now he can stay here with Kairi.

He looks at her, curiously. "...Time for what?" he asks.

She smiles then, her whole face lighting up.

"For whatever we want!" she says, throwing her hands up in the air in emphasis.

"We could go for a walk, we could go swimming, we could go climb a tree, we could look for seashells..." her voice takes on a slightly sing-song quality as she lists off their many options.

"Or we could stay here. And just be."

Sora laughs.

"We could do all those things," he says cheerfully. And it's as though he'd never had a bad day at all.

But he doesn't move yet. He kind of likes just sitting here with Kairi, too. It's nice.

She gives him a look.

"Don't be silly. Then we wouldn't have anything to look forward to tomorrow." she says with a laugh, poking him in the chest.

Sora half-laughs, partly in embarrassment.

"Oh. Yeah."

He grins at her. "Well...what do you wanna do?"

'Cause whatever she wants to do, he'll do it.

She bites her lip, thinking.

"Lets make a map of the island - here in the sand." she says, grinning. "We can find sticks and rocks.. and coral."

She picks up some of the debris that the waves have washed onto the sand, some seaweed and some small, sodden pieces of driftwood.

"Like this," she demonstrates, making an outline the shape of the coastline in the sand.

He watches her for a moment, then nods.

"Yeah!" He likes this idea. Quickly, he stands up and dusts himself off. Granules of sand fall from his clothing.

"I'm gonna find something that can be used for the paopu tree," he says with a grin, pointing to their usual favourite spot. "And...the cave!"

He dashes across the shore.

She watches him with a soft smile on her face. She knows that she has successfully vanquished the last traces of Sora's bad mood - and it gives her a feeling of accomplishment.

She likes it when Sora smiles.

Thoughts of Sora invariably lead to thoughts of Riku and she finds herself wondering why neither of them has seen the other boy today. That's a rare thing indeed. She keeps her hands busy as she thinks, making 'waves' - wavy lines drawn in the sand with a stick - to signify the water around the island.

A short moment later, Sora is swiftly running back to Kairi, a bundle of assorted items in his arms. There are more spare wood pieces, twigs mostly, some rocks and leaves. He's also brought back a fallen paopu fruit, slightly dried up but still retaining its star-shape.

He's been busy, thinking of all the things he can use for their map.

He dumps them onto the sand beside her, then crouches, resting most of his weight on the backs of his feet.

"That looks really cool so far," he muses.

"Thanks," she says simply. "Together, we'll make it even better."

She points to two locations on the 'map'.

"Your house is here. Mine is here." she says, using some of the twigs to make the shape of a house in each location. "Riku's house is...over here." she continues, pointing to a third spot.

She considers the empty space before them. "Can you do the cave?"

"Yeah," he cheers, picking up some of the stones from his pile.

He starts to lay several of them down flat in the sand, making little indents so the stones can settle properly. He creates a little circular shape, then places one bit of the paopu fruit in the centre to symbolize the specialness of the spot.

He smiles. "Is that good?" he asks Kairi.

She looks up from where she's been adding the school and smiles.

"Perfect." she says.

"Next we should do the tree."

"The paopu tree?" Sora asks. He holds out the rest of the slightly shrunken, wrinkly paopu fruit. "We could use this to build it."

Date: 2006-12-18 03:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
She nods.

"Yes. To show how important it is."

How many afternoons have they spent around that tree? Sharing secrets. Telling stories. Playing make-believe. So many of Kairi's best memories have taken place at, or in the immediate vicinity of the tree.

Sora feels the same way too. The tree is their 'usual spot', where they always meet up to go on their so-called adventures.

And ever since Kairi arrived on the island, the importance of that tree has become even more special to him.

He wants to make this representation the best he can. He quietly begins to build the trunk with small bits of the driftwood.

She works in silence for a few minutes, then looks up at him with a shy smile.

"Thanks for doing this with me, Sora."

From: [identity profile]
He turns towards her, then grins his trademark cheesy grin which will never change. Even when he gets older.

"Don't mention it!" he says. "Anyway, I like doing this with you. It's fun."

In a moment's time, the trunk of the tree is built as best Sora can make it, which means that while the overall concept is quite nice, it's a little sloppy.

Looks like Kairi's going to have to help him out a bit.

Isn't that what friends are for? Helping?

The tree doesn't need that much work. A minor tweak in one or two places makes all the difference.

Impulsively, she hugs him.

From: [identity profile]
He grins but it quickly turns to a look of surprise as he awkwardly accepts Kairi's hug. After all, this sort of thing is quite strange for an eleven year old boy.

By then, with all the rest of the important locations plotted and built upon the sand, the map looks more or less complete. The sun has begun to set, and while Sora wishes he could stay out here until dark, he knows that his mum will probably be expecting him home for dinner any moment now.

"That was fun," he repeats, smiling at Kairi. He gets up and dusts his pants of sand. "But I guess we oughta go home, now."

She isn't offended, not really, but in situations like these, certain responses must be observed.

"Oh, Sora." she says with a sigh, as she rises to her feet. She quickly brushes the worst of the sand off her legs, before looking at him.

She crosses her arms and gives him a look - knowing full well he won't understand what he's done wrong - only that's he's done something wrong. He'll understand it when he's older.

This lasts perhaps, thirty seconds - before she gives in to the smile she's been fighting all along.

"Ok. I'll see you tomorrow!"

Sora is a little confused as to Kairi's reaction and behaviour. His first thought is, oh, girls...but it's Kairi. And though Kairi's a girl, she isn't just any girl. She's...special!

Once she smiles, he feels far more relieved. He's been beginning to think he had done something wrong! Only...he isn't sure what that something was.

His expression quickly changes into a grin and he nods. "Yeah! I'll see you, Kairi."

And then he dashes off.
